  • Chairman of the Board - Jim Tyler Inducted into Iowa Hall of Fame

    On December 3, 2015, Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Company Chairman of the Board, Jim Tyler was inducted into the Iowa Business Hall of Fame. The Greater Des Moines Committee named Charese Yanney, James Hubbell III and James Tyler to the Iowa Business Hall of Fame for their outstanding contributions to the development and enhancement of Iowa's business climate.

    Jim Tyler is the second-generation family owner of Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Co., which he has managed since 1958. In 1975, Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling purchased the Des Moines area Coca-Cola franchise. In 1989, Tyler led the way as the company moved to a larger campus in Waukee. Tyler became the company's chairman in 1991. He served on the Atlantic School Board for nine years and held high positions in the Atlantic Rotary Club, Atlantic Golf & Country Club and Atlantic Chamber of Commerce. He also served as president of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.

    The Coca-Cola Company announces Letter of Intent with U.S. Bottling Partner

    Implementation of 21st Century Beverage Partnership Model

    in the United States Continues

    Atlantic, Iowa – October 21, 2015 – Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Company announced today that it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with The Coca-Cola Company for expanded territory rights. The bottler will assume territories in the area which surrounds the distribution centers located in Mason City (IA)*, Ames (IA)*, Spirit Lake (IA)*, Cedar Rapids (IA), Dubuque (IA), Ottumwa (IA), and Quad Cities (IL). Expected transition dates are subject to the parties reaching Definitive Agreements. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    Consistent with previous transactions, The Coca-Cola Company and these bottlers will work collaboratively to benefit from more rational and contiguous operating territories across the United States; an improved, more integrated information technology platform across bottlers; and a new beverage agreement that supports the Coca-Cola system’s evolving U.S. operating model.

    Coke Days in Atlantic, Iowa is the second largest mini-convention in the world (second to Atlanta, GA)!!!

    Atlantic is the Coca-Cola Capital of Iowa, and we welcome everyone to join us for our annual Coca-Cola Days Celebration. 2015 will be the 23rd annual Coca-Cola Days, set for September 25th- 26th. Our celebration is the second largest mini-convention of Coca-Cola collectors in the United States. (Second only to Atlanta, Georgia!) The theme for 2015 is "Bottling Happiness" to celebrate the 100th year of the Contour Bottle. “Discover Atlantic” at the 2015 Coca-Cola Days Celebration.

    The Coca-Cola Days committee is selling raffle tickets for a “Discover Atlantic” package to celebrate the 2015 Coca-Cola Days with the help of our presenting sponsor, Atlantic Bottling Company. The celebration begins September 25th and runs till September 26th. Raffle tickets are available for $5 each. They can be purchased now from the Chamber office or from Coca-Cola Days committee members: Dolly Bergmann, Margaret Slepsky, Jolene Sisler, Ellen Rutherford, Jolene Roecker, Mike Pappas, Kathie Hockenberry, Bob Lansdown and Charlene Johnson. The package is valued at $1,000.

    Included in this package are several items from Atlantic businesses. Included are certificates for a one night stay at Boulders Inn and Suites, a large gelato at Sweet Joy Shoppe, a personal pie from the Downtowner, tenderloin lunch for two from the Family Table and a tour of the Atlantic Bottling Company for two from Atlantic Bottling. There is a $25 gas card for use at the BP station from Olsen Fuel. Other items include: a Yeti cooler from Connect-A-Dock, an Under Armour backpack from Brown Shoe Fit, a 1998 NAPA 500 Coca-Cola Bottle from Atlantic Motor Supply (NAPA) and a six pack of Tyler Coca-Cola bottles from Kurt Roberts. As a sweet treat, you will also get a dozen cookies shaped like a Coca-Cola bottle from Wild Almond Cakes and Pastries. Finally, there is a Santa Coca-Cola Bottle from the Atlantic Coca-Cola Center and Museum, along with a few Coca-Cola souvenirs from the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce.

    The raffle will take place at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 26th at the close of the show: Swap and Sell, at the Herring Building, located at Second and Poplar Street.

  • Get to Know Us Better!

    Frank P. "Perk" Tyler began an ice cream and ice business in Villisca, Iowa around 1905. In 1909 he sold the business to sons Royal, Harry, and Henry Tyler who, in 1915, expanded the business by producing soda named "Tyler's Flavors."

    Soda and ice cream sales were so strong that year that they expanded their building to include a bottling room connected to their ice cream plant. Sadly, the addition was lost to a fire that same year. In 1916, the brothers purchased a creamery in Clarinda, Iowa. In the creamery's safe they found a franchise contract for Coca-Cola. The Tyler’s had heard of this product and its success elsewhere, but Iowans weren't familiar with it. The Tyler’s began making Coca-Cola, adding a few bottles to the cases of Tyler's Flavors. In no time, Iowans were requesting more Coke.

    In 1923, Royal sold his interest to Harry and Henry, who continued expanding the business by purchasing four additional bottling companies in Shenandoah, Atlantic, and Creston, Iowa and Grand Island, Nebraska. In 1929 they acquired the franchise rights for the Atlantic plant to bottle and distribute Coca-Cola.

    By 1930 the Tyler Brothers had sold their ice cream business and turned their focus to soft drinks. In 1949, Harry and Henry divided their business by drawing straws. Harry got Atlantic and Creston; Henry got Shenandoah and Grand Island.

    Harry's son Jim was managing the company by 1958. They served customers in a 60-mile radius of Atlantic with Coca-Cola, 7-Up and Tyler's Flavors products. At this time the company had 16 employees; ten years later there were 40 employees and the company had added Squirt, Dr. Pepper, Frostie Root Beer, and Tab and Like to its lineup.

    On April 1, 1975, Atlantic Bottling purchased the Des Moines area Coca-Cola franchise, and burgeoned the brand's presence and popularity. This was accomplished in large part due to Jim's son, Kirk Tyler, who was placed in charge of sales for the company in 1981.

    By the late 1980's, the growth of Coca-Cola in Des Moines required more space than the Tyler's existing facility could hold, and in 1989 the Des Moines operation moved into its warehouse and sales center on Hickman Road in Waukee. In 1991 Kirk Tyler was named President of Atlantic Bottling Company, and Jim became Chairman of the Board of Directors.

    Three generations of the Tyler family have built and continue to expand on "delivering the refreshment" of Coca-Cola and related products to customers throughout the Atlantic Bottling Company's franchise territories.
